THE BAND

 

CHRIS SHANKS

MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Chris Shanks has been Musical Director at Langholm Town Band since January 2013. He studied at the then RSAMD, now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, as well as studying Euphonium under Anthony Swainson and David Thornton. Chris also studied conducting under Nigel Bodice MBE. 

Chris loves everything about music making, whether band or coral, youth groups to senior groups and his background in music started with The Salvation Army where to this day he is the Young Peoples Band Leader and Principal Euphonium of the Senior Band at Bellshill. Chris also conducts the West of Scotland Divisional Youth Band and plays piano for the Divisional Youth Chorus as well. He is also a member of the renowned Household Troops Band of the The Salvation Army. In the contesting band world, Chris currently plays Euphonium for Whitburn Band.

Favourite Music - Fraternity, Journey of the Long Wolf, In Gardens of Peace, As If a Voice were in them, Lament from Macbeth, The Water of Tyne, Prelude on Lavenham.

Most Memorable Moments - 2nd at The Scottish Championships 2020, 2nd (Overall) at the Borders Entertainment Contest 2017.

 

ROB HUME

GUEST CONDUCTOR

Rob Hume was born and educated in Newcastle upon Tyne. He began playing trumpet at the age of 12 and was a pupil of Roger Payne. He went on to Huddersfield University to study trumpet with David James, composition with Richard Steinitz and conducting with Barrie Webb. Whilst still a student his compositions were performed by the Manchester Camerata and Grimethorpe Colliery Band. On completion of his studies he was commissioned to write a piece for the Brighouse and Rastrick Band as part of the Wakefield Cathedral centenary celebrations. Rob moved to the Scottish Borders in 1988 to pursue an instrumental teaching career. He has since been in demand as a conductor of brass and wind bands, and has been the M.D of shows such as "Kiss Me Kate”, "Singin` in the Rain" and "Crazy for You". His arrangements for brass and wind band are published by Obrasso Verlag (Switzerland) and Goodmusic (UK). He is also one of only a handful of Europeans to have their orchestral arrangements published by Alfred Music (USA). As well as his work with brass bands Rob also conducts the Scottish Borders Wind Orchestra and Scottish Borders Chamber Orchestra.

SOPRANO

Kenneth has been in the band "forever".
Favourite Piece - Any Common Riding March.
Memorable Moment - Every moment is memorable.

NICOLE WEATHERSTONE

SOLO CORNET

Nicole joined the band in 1978, first public outing was New Years Day 1979.
Favourite Piece - Glasnost, Bohemian Rhapsody and you've got to love a bit of Wicked.
Memorable Moment - 8:30am, Langholm Market Place on the last Friday in July any year.

SERENA WOOD

SOLO CORNET

Serena joined the band in 1993.
Favourite Piece - Common Riding Tunes
Memorable Moment - Playing in Durham Cathedral at Durham Miners Gala and playing the French National Anthem at Murrayfield in 2016.

ASHLEIGH CALVERT

SOLO CORNET

Ashleigh joined the band in 2007.
Favourite Piece - They Shall Come from the East
Memorable Moment - Playing in Durham Cathedral at the Durham Miners Gala twice.

CAITLIN WEATHERSTONE

SOLO CORNET

Caitlin joined the band in 2007.
Favourite Piece - Ticket to Ride
Memorable Moment - I find it hard to pick out one moment- they all melt into one- but I always find that it’s the people who make the occasions memorable...in the words of Wee Sam… Go us!

Rachael joined the band in 2010.
Favourite Piece - Flowers of the Forest
Memorable Moment - Playing at The Royal Military Tattoo - Eve of Waterloo Concert at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh celebrating the bands bicentenary.

Josh joined the band in 2010
Favourite Piece - Mermaid of Zennor
Memorable Moment - Best Third Section Band at the Borders three years in a row. Scottish Borders Youth Brass Band, representing Scotland at the European Youth Brass Band Championships. Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay 2014.

AMANDA HODGSON

2ND CORNET

Amanda joined the band in 1994 until she left in 1999 to go to University. Then re-joined in January 2016.
Favourite Piece - Common Riding Tunes
Memorable Moment - Playing the French National Anthem with Whitburn band at Murrayfield during the Six Nations Championships 2016.

DAVID CALVERT

David joined the band in 1952.
Favourite Piece - "all kinds of music'
Memorable Moment - Playing for the Queen (1957). Playing Stars and Stripes along Elizabeth Street with Neil Armstrong behind the band (1972). Usher Hall for the Eve of Waterloo Concert (2015).

MUNGO MANN

Mungo joined the band in 2017.
Favourite Piece - Napoleon on the Alps
Memorable Moment - Playing Vibraphone at the Scottish Championships and every Langholm Common Riding.

ALISTAIR PAISLEY

3RD CORNET

Alistair joined the band in 2018.
Favourite Piece - Barnard Castle
Memorable Moment - Langholm Common Riding 2018, first Common Riding in the band.

 

HORN SECTION

Christine has been in the band since 1979.
Favourite Piece - Lament from Macbeth, Toccata in D Minor.
Memorable Moment - Lord Mayors Parade, National Finals 2010, CD Recording, 2nd Border Entertainment Contest.

Melvyn has been in the band since 2015.
Favourite Piece - Resurgam Eric Ball
Memorable Moment - 3rd at the Scottish Championships in 2015.

DONNA BROWN

Donna has been in the band since 1999.
Favourite Piece - Common Riding Marches
Memorable Moment - Going to the National Brass Band Championships in 2010 and playing the French National Anthem at Murrayfield with Whitburn Band.

Connor joined the band in 2017.
Favourite Piece - Star Wars
Memorable Moment - Playing at the European Youth Brass Band Championships 2017 with the Scottish Borders Youth Brass Band.

John joined the band in 2017.
Favourite Piece - I enjoy all kinds of Music but my favourite is the Common Riding tunes.
Memorable Moment - My first Common Riding playing with the band.

James Brown has been in the band for 20 years, a few years hiatus whilst in the Army.
Favourite Piece - Common Riding Tunes and Jacob de Haan.
Memorable Moment - Every moment with LTB is memorable, some more than others, but not sure I can talk about those here.
